A better understanding of Fibromyalgia (FMS) will greatly assist in developing partnerships with health providers and making informed decisions about the management of Fibromyalgia and chronic pain.

Current research suggests Fibromyalgia management involves 20% medical interventions and 80% lifestyle adjustments. Interventions aim to break the pain and symptom cycle.

Management includes pacing and lifestyle adjustments with self-monitoring to link symptom levels and evaluate treatment outcomes. Interventions include tailored sleep, movement, exercise, stress reduction and dietary approaches, as well as combined multidisciplinary approaches to pain and fatigue.

  1. The South Australian Fibromyalgia Patient Education Model includes structured self-management programs and modules consistent with the Stanford University and Flinders Chronic Disease Management Programs.
  2. The South Australian Fibromyalgia Cycle of Care Program provides core chronic disease management topics for Case Managers and patients to review and demonstrate proactive management and coordinated Fibromyalgia multi system care over the 12 month Care Plan. This program has been developed to support patients requiring management documentation for Centrelink and NDIS. It provides 14 core chronic disease management topics for Case Managers and patients with an Annual Cycle of Care checklist to cover Management and Education topics. This program with documentation enables a patient to demonstrate they are proactively managing their condition using a coordinated Fibromyalgia multi system care over the 12-month Care Plan.
