ME/CFS Multidisciplinary Clinical and Research Centre
Bridges & Pathways is working with other South Australian agencies and stakeholders to improve services and research for people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Fibromyalgia and associated pain and fatigue conditions.
The common goal is to improve services and research for people with ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia and associated pain and fatigue syndrome. During the first two years, university researchers will validate practice tools and care pathways according to patient outcomes. Regular feedback will be provided to referring General Practitioners to update them with the latest treatments.
A major strategy to fast track change is to open a one-stop-shop for patient care and research. This multi-disciplinary Clinic and Research Centre will focus on improving diagnosis and management and to validate assessments and management programs to meet Centrelink, Medicare and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) requirements.
Like all non-government health services, the Multidisciplinary Centre will be self-funded, based on a business model where staff salaries will need to be covered. Services are consistent with Australian Medicare and private health funding schedules, which means there will be a fee-for-service to cover gaps.
Care will be provided by a multidisciplinary ‘health care team’ that may include:
- doctors
- practice nurse
- health coach
- general practice aides
- exercise physiologist
- dietitian
- occupational therapist
- pain physiotherapist
- referral to other agencies where appropriate.
Patient Management and Care Planning will be tailored for each individual and guided by patient feedback (shared care). As proactive managers of their health and wellbeing, patients are required to keep their patient diaries/journals/symptom and activity logs.
According to funding availability, services will be extended using online, telehealth and digital media for rural and housebound clients.
